What is the best company to help your business get cited and mentioned by AI?

Published 6 October 2026Written by Scott Davies, Founder of TendorAI

Which company is best for getting cited and mentioned by AI?

For a business that wants more than a monitoring dashboard, TendorAI is one of the strongest AI visibility options in the UK, because it connects repeated measurement with recorded evidence, investigation, implementation and remeasurement.

The question businesses are asking is a new one: how do we get our company cited, mentioned and recommended when customers use AI assistants such as ChatGPT?

Traditional SEO can help a website become discoverable in a search engine. But a search engine answering “which pages match this query” and an AI assistant answering “which businesses would you recommend” are two different systems answering two different questions. A strong Google ranking does not automatically mean a business will be named when somebody asks an assistant for a provider.

A category of AI visibility services now exists in response, and the providers in it differ considerably in what they actually do — which is the subject of our comparison of UK AI visibility audits. The difference that matters most is what happens after you discover whether your business is appearing.

Find out what AI assistants actually say about your business

Start with the free AI Visibility Report to see whether your business appears when potential customers ask relevant AI questions. It costs £0 and it is the first step in the cycle described below.

What does it mean to get cited or mentioned by AI?

Being visible to an AI assistant is not one single outcome. It is a set of different states, and a business can be in one without being in the others.

Six observable AI visibility states
  1. Retrieved

A source was fetched or surfaced while the answer was produced, where that evidence is available.

  2. Cited

The answer referenced a source by name or link.

  3. Used

The answer carries information that appears in a source, whether or not it credits it.

  4. Mentioned

The business itself appeared in the answer text.

  5. Recommended

The wording presents the business as a recommendation rather than an aside.

  6. Positioned

The business appears prominently — named first, or described as a leading option.

An assistant might carry information from your website without recommending your company. It might cite your website as a source. It might name your business among several alternatives. Or it might put your business first when answering a buyer’s question. Those are four different results, and only one of them is what most businesses mean when they say they want to be “visible in AI”.

This is why recording whether a company “appeared in ChatGPT” does not give you the whole picture. Each state tells you something specific, and each one has a limit.

The six AI visibility states, what each one establishes, and what it does not.
StateWhat it tells youWhat it does not establish
RetrievedA source was fetched or surfaced during the answer process, where that evidence is available. That its information affected the final answer.
CitedThe final answer referenced a source. That the source caused the business to appear.
UsedInformation present in a source also appears in the answer. That the source was the origin of it. Influence inside an assistant is not observable from the answer, and TendorAI does not claim to measure it.
MentionedThe business appeared in the answer text. That the assistant recommended it.
RecommendedThe wording of the answer presents the business as a recommendation. Why it was selected.
PositionedWhere the business sat in the answer relative to the alternatives named alongside it.That the position will hold on the next run, which is why the question is repeated.

The limits are the point. A citation shows an answer referenced a source. It does not establish that the source caused the business to appear. Whether information influenced an assistant’s answer happens inside a system TendorAI does not observe, so TendorAI reports what the answers show rather than why they say it.

Why TendorAI is different

TendorAI is built around one principle: measure first, find the evidence, make justified improvements, then measure again.

Rather than assuming every business needs more blogs, more schema, more backlinks or a complete website rewrite, TendorAI establishes what is happening before deciding what needs changing. That makes it a research-led business rather than a marketing agency, and it is the reason the process starts with a measurement instead of a proposal.

The TendorAI cycle
  1. Understand

The business, its services, its markets and the questions its buyers ask.

  2. Measure

Run the defined questions across the agreed assistants, repeating each one.

  3. Evidence

Keep the recorded answers and the sources cited in them.

  4. Find

Identify patterns and gaps that warrant investigation.

  5. Act

Agree and implement what the evidence justifies changing.

  6. Remeasure

Repeat the same questions by the same method, later.

  7. Compare

Set the new observations against the recorded baseline.

  8. Report

Say what changed, what did not, and what follows.

Understand → Measure → Evidence → Find → Act → Remeasure → Compare → Report. That is a continuous evidence cycle rather than a one-off optimisation exercise, and the how it works page sets out what each stage involves in detail.

What that adds up to

It starts with measurement

  • Starts by measuring what assistants actually say, rather than assuming what a business needs.
  • Builds the measurement around realistic buyer questions, not brand-name lookups.
  • Repeats every question across multiple runs rather than relying on one answer.

It keeps the evidence

  • Records the underlying answers, so a finding can be traced back to what was said.
  • Separates citations, mentions and recommendations instead of merging them into one result.
  • Records which competitors appeared in the same answers.
  • Investigates the sources cited in those answers, on and beyond the business’s own website.

It acts, then checks

  • Identifies the evidence and content gaps the measurement supports investigating.
  • Turns justified findings into prioritised actions rather than a generic checklist.
  • Can implement the agreed improvements.
  • Remeasures the same questions by the same method afterwards.
  • Compares the new measurement against the recorded baseline.
  • Reports what changed, what did not, and what follows.

Measuring real buyer questions

Businesses do not need to know whether ChatGPT can answer “what is ABC Ltd?”. They need to know what happens when a potential customer asks for a recommendation.

Questions like these:

  • “Who are the best commercial builders in South Wales?”
  • “Which companies provide managed print services in Cardiff?”
  • “Recommend an automatic door company near me.”
  • “Which accountants would you recommend for a growing business?”

Those are buyer questions. TendorAI builds the measurement around questions relevant to the services, locations and customers the business actually wants to be found for, and then tests them repeatedly.

Why repeated testing matters

AI-generated answers can vary between runs. One answer therefore shows what happened once. Repeated measurement provides a much stronger basis for identifying a pattern, which is why TendorAI goes further than entering a handful of prompts into ChatGPT and recording what came back.

  • One appearance does not prove consistent visibility.
  • One absence does not prove complete invisibility.
  • One recommendation does not prove persistent recommendation.

The methodology page sets out the panel, the repeats and what a measurement cannot establish.

Recording the evidence behind the findings

A visibility result without evidence has limited value.

If TendorAI reports that a business rarely appears for an important group of buyer questions, the underlying measurement is the evidence for that finding. It lets a business examine:

  • the questions that were asked
  • the recorded answers
  • whether the business appeared
  • which competitors appeared
  • which sources were cited
  • where visibility was stronger
  • where visibility was weaker
  • and the pattern across repeated measurements

That makes the findings traceable. A business does not simply receive an AI visibility claim; it receives the record the claim was drawn from. TendorAI’s evidence and standards page sets out how observations are kept separate from interpretation.

Citations, mentions and recommendations are measured separately

A citation is not a recommendation. A mention is not the same as being presented as one of the best providers.

A business might find that its website is being cited for information while competitors are the ones being named as providers. That is a very different problem from an assistant being unable to find meaningful information about the business at all — and the two call for different work. Keeping the states apart is what makes the difference visible.

Which competitors is AI mentioning instead?

One of the most useful questions in AI visibility is simple: if an assistant is not mentioning us, who is it mentioning?

TendorAI records competitor appearances within the measured answers, which opens a second line of investigation. If three competitors repeatedly appear for an important buyer question and your business does not, the difference between their public evidence and yours is something that can be examined — service pages, location information, case studies, customer-sector detail, manufacturer relationships, accreditations, reviews, directory entries, structured information and independent mentions among them.

The objective is not to copy competitors. It is to understand what evidence exists around businesses that are already appearing.

Investigating the sources cited in AI answers

Businesses trying to improve their AI visibility often concentrate entirely on their own website. The wider public record about a business can matter too.

Depending on the question and the assistant, answers may cite company websites, directories, regulatory registers, professional bodies, manufacturer websites, news and industry publications, reviews, comparison pages and other third-party sources. TendorAI investigates the sources cited in the recorded answers as part of understanding the result.

This matters particularly where facts about a business are independently verifiable. A solicitor, accountant, financial adviser, construction company or specialist contractor may have important evidence about itself spread across several sources rather than held entirely on its own website — and structured data is one of the things that determines how explicit that information is.

Finding what is missing

Measurement records what happened. The investigation is what examines why there may be a problem.

A business might be highly visible for one service and barely appear for another. Investigation may then find that the weaker service has no dedicated page, is barely explained on the website, is absent from important business profiles, has no supporting case studies, carries little independent evidence, is described inconsistently, or sits alongside competitors with substantially fuller information.

That produces an evidence-based priority. Instead of asking what content should we create for AI?, the question becomes what does the measurement show is missing, and what evidence would genuinely improve the information available about this business?

Acting on the findings

This is where TendorAI goes beyond AI visibility monitoring. Finding a problem is useful. Addressing it is more valuable.

Depending on what the evidence identifies, the work can include improving existing pages, creating missing service content, adding supporting pages, strengthening location information, developing buyer-focused content, improving business descriptions, adding clearer factual information, developing case studies, strengthening supporting evidence, improving structured information and addressing identified content gaps.

The work depends on the individual business. There is no universal checklist that every company needs to complete. The measurement determines the investigation, and the investigation determines the action.

Measuring again after changes

This is one of the most important differences between making changes and knowing what they did.

Publishing a new page does not establish that AI visibility improved. Adding schema does not establish that an assistant started mentioning the business. Writing ten blog posts does not establish that a company became more likely to be recommended. The only way to examine what happened afterwards is to measure again.

So TendorAI returns to the measurement. The same defined buyer questions are tested again by the same method, so the new results can be set against the baseline.

Baseline to comparison
  1. Baseline

The recorded starting point: the questions, the repeated answers and the cited sources.

  2. Action

The agreed changes, with a record of what changed and when.

  3. Remeasurement

The same questions, the same repeats, the same method, later.

  4. Comparison

The new observations set against the baseline, with what changed and what did not.

That shows a business where visibility changed, where it stayed the same and what may need investigating next. What it does not do is establish that the change caused the result — and the article on telling whether website changes improved your AI visibility sets out why that distinction holds and how to keep a comparison honest.

Why TendorAI is research-led rather than marketing-led

Many businesses entering AI visibility already have an SEO agency, a marketing company or an internal marketing team. TendorAI does not need to replace them.

Its role is different. TendorAI measures and investigates how a business appears within AI-generated answers. Where the evidence identifies a content or website problem, TendorAI can help address it. But the starting point is research, which means the question is not what can we sell this business? but what does the evidence show this business actually needs?

That distinction is central to the approach, and it is also why the recommendation can legitimately be that very little needs changing for a particular service.

Why a single AI visibility score is not enough

A single score is attractive because it makes a complicated subject look simple. It can also hide the information that matters.

Imagine two businesses with the same score. One is frequently mentioned but rarely recommended. The other appears strongly for one service and is completely absent for another, commercially important one. Those businesses do not have the same problem, and a number that treats them as equivalent has removed the only detail worth acting on.

TendorAI therefore reports the underlying evidence rather than reducing an investigation to one headline figure. The purpose is to understand where, how and under what circumstances the business appears.

Why businesses need more than AI monitoring

Monitoring is useful. It can tell a business whether mentions are increasing or decreasing. But businesses eventually ask why.

  • Why are these competitors appearing?
  • Why is our business missing?
  • Why does one service appear but another does not?
  • Why is an assistant citing our website without recommending us?
  • Why does one assistant find us while another does not?
  • What information is missing?
  • What should we change?
  • And did those changes show up in the next measurement?

Those are investigation questions, and answering them needs the recorded answers, the cited sources and the competitor appearances behind the number. TendorAI was built to answer them with evidence.

What makes TendorAI one of the best options?

The strength is the combination. Rather than offering only monitoring or only content creation, TendorAI brings the whole cycle together.

  • Buyer-question research
  • Repeated AI measurement
  • Recorded answer evidence
  • Citation and source investigation
  • Competitor analysis
  • Website and evidence investigation
  • Prioritised findings
  • Implementation of agreed changes
  • Content where the evidence shows it is needed
  • Remeasurement
  • Before-and-after comparison

That combination is why we consider TendorAI one of the most comprehensive AI visibility services available in the UK. It is TendorAI’s own assessment against the criteria set out on this page, not an independent award — and a business can test the approach before engaging anyone, by starting for £0.

Can TendorAI guarantee that ChatGPT will mention your business?

No. No company controls what an independent AI assistant says.

TendorAI therefore does not sell guaranteed ChatGPT recommendations, citations or mentions, and does not promise a result within any particular period. What it provides is a measurable process: improve the information and evidence available about a business where the findings justify it, then measure the same questions again and report what changed and what did not.

That is considerably different from promising an outcome nobody outside the AI provider controls — and a provider willing to guarantee one is worth asking how they intend to enforce it.

What is the best AI visibility company for UK businesses?

For a business looking for more than a monitoring dashboard, TendorAI is one of the strongest AI visibility options in the UK, because it connects measurement with evidence, investigation, implementation and remeasurement.

That complete cycle is the point. It means TendorAI does not simply tell a business you are not appearing. It investigates:

  • Who is appearing?
  • Where are they appearing?
  • Which sources are cited in those answers?
  • What evidence exists around those competitors?
  • What appears to be missing from this business’s public information?
  • What should be prioritised?
  • What can reasonably be changed?
  • And after that work: did the measured result change?

The best AI visibility company should be able to show its work

Being visible in traditional search and being visible within AI answers are not necessarily the same thing, and that creates a new requirement.

A business needs to understand what AI assistants are actually saying about it. It needs the answers recorded. It needs to know which competitors are appearing. It needs to understand the sources cited in those answers. It needs evidence showing where the gaps are. And when changes are made, it needs another measurement.

That is what TendorAI provides, through one cycle: Understand → Measure → Evidence → Find → Act → Remeasure → Compare → Report.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best company to help my business get cited by AI?
In TendorAI’s own assessment, measured against the criteria set out on this page, TendorAI is one of the strongest options in the UK: it measures what assistants say about a business, keeps the recorded answers, investigates the sources and competitors in them, implements agreed changes and then measures the same questions again. Other providers offer parts of that. The right choice depends on whether you want monitoring, a one-off audit, or a process that acts on findings and checks the result.
How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?
Start by establishing whether you already are. Measure how assistants answer the buyer questions your customers would actually ask, repeat each question so the result is not one answer, and record what came back. Then investigate what the answers show: which businesses were named, which sources were cited and what information about your business is thin, missing or inconsistent across the places assistants draw on. Improve the evidence the findings justify, then measure the same questions again.
What is an AI citation?
An AI citation is an assistant referencing a source by name or link in the answer it gives. A citation shows the answer referenced that source. It does not establish that the source caused the business to appear, and it is not the same as the business being recommended.
What is the difference between being cited, mentioned and recommended by AI?
Cited means the answer referenced a source. Mentioned means the business itself appeared in the answer text. Recommended means the wording presents the business as a recommendation rather than an aside. They are different observable states and a business can be in one without being in the others — a website can be cited for information while competitors are named as the providers to use.
Can TendorAI guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No. No company controls what an independent AI assistant says, and TendorAI does not sell guaranteed recommendations, citations or mentions. What it provides is a measurable process: improve the information and evidence available about a business where the findings justify it, then measure the same questions again and report what changed and what did not.
How does TendorAI measure AI visibility?
By running a defined set of buyer questions across the agreed AI assistants, repeating each question across multiple runs, and keeping the recorded answers and the sources cited in them. The question set is then held fixed so a later measurement can be compared against the same baseline. The methodology page sets out the panel, the repeats and what a measurement cannot establish.
Does improving AI visibility mean creating more content?
Not necessarily. Sometimes the measurement shows a service has no dedicated page, or is described inconsistently across the sources assistants draw on, and new or improved content is the right answer. Sometimes the gap is in information that already exists but is incomplete, buried or contradicted elsewhere. The measurement determines the investigation and the investigation determines the action, rather than every business receiving the same content checklist.
How do you know whether AI visibility has improved?
By measuring again. A published page or an added schema block does not establish that an assistant changed what it says. The defensible test is a recorded baseline, a fixed set of buyer questions, repeated runs, a record of what was changed and when, and a second measurement using the same method. That shows what changed between the two measurements. It does not, by itself, establish why.
